New Lighting for the Bridgeport Milling Machine

mill light 2 005

One of the things that bug most people as they get older is poor lighting in the shop. If you want any degree of accuracy when doing the work we do; you will need good light, and (in my case) some magnification. A few weeks ago I got what I considered a fair deal on medical magnifier with florescent lighting. It has a 5X diopter lens, and I really liked it from the start. I mounted it above my lathe, and it really helps when doing “close” work.

Scotchbrite Wheel Adapter for my Grinder

scotchbrite wheel adapter 010

There are a number of parts that I make that just don’t get the kind of finish I’m looking for out of a belt grinder, and hand de-burring is way to time consuming for my taste. I had been looking at Scotchbrite wheels for a while, but couldn’t find any arbors that would mate the wheels to any of my grinders. My guess is that the adapters are only available from Scotchbrite, and I wasn’t going there (the wheels are pricey enough). my best alternative is to make one.

Shaper Attachment for the USMT Horizontal Mill

USMT shaper 2 005

(Another Craigslist score)………..

About a year ago I got an Email from my friend Steve (the guy who sold me the United States Machine Tool Milling Machine) that a shaper head was posted on C-list that would fit the mill. I snatched it and (as usual) it sat around for a year or so, until I got around to adapting it to my mill. Its funny how nothing ever REALLY fits without some modification. Well, I finally got around to working on it a few weeks ago (got tired of tripping over it is more like it).

Jet Belt Grinder Modification

belt grinder III 006

I’m a habitual Craigslist troller, and when I found this Jet “bench grinder” for $100 I snatched it up. It was a 3450 RPM 1 HP deal, with a 4X48″ belt sander on one side, and a 8″ grinding wheel on the other. I had a 2X48″ Kalamazoo (partial) belt grinder that I wanted to adapt to the wheel side, so that I could have multiple grit capabilities on the same machine. Belt grinders are about as handy as it gets for fabrication, and this seemed to a good way to go.

Grizzly Model G4011 Sheet Metal Machine for the Shop (Slip Roll, Shear and Brake)

slip roll shear 006

I’ve been wanting a Metal Brake in the shop for a long time, and Rich Soby mentioned he had one for sale a while back so I bought it. I had a folding brake in mind, but this one looks to be a very useful machine. In fact, I might be better off with this type machine than what I had planned on originally.
